Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Hover Translator ("the extension", "we", "our") handles information when you use the Chrome extension. We are committed to being transparent and to collecting as little data as possible.

The short version: Hover Translator stores your settings and usage counter locally on your device. We do not have a server. We do not collect, transmit, or sell any personal data.

1. What data we collect

Data stored locally on your device

The extension uses chrome.storage.local — storage that lives entirely within your Chrome browser on your own device. The following information is stored:

This data never leaves your device and is never sent to our servers, because we do not operate any servers.

Data we do NOT collect

2. Third-party services

When you hover over a word, the extension sends a translation request to one of the following third-party APIs. The word being translated is included in the request. No other personal data is sent.

Google Translate (unofficial API)

Used by default for high-quality translations. Requests are sent to translate.googleapis.com. This service is operated by Google LLC. Please refer to Google's Privacy Policy for information on how they handle request data.

MyMemory Translation API

An optional translation provider. If you provide your email address in the extension settings to increase your MyMemory daily limit, that email is sent directly to MyMemory's servers as part of the API request. We do not store or process your email — it goes directly from your browser to MyMemory. Please refer to MyMemory's Privacy Policy.

Wikipedia API

Used to fetch short descriptions for proper nouns (names, places, organisations). Requests are sent to en.wikipedia.org. Please refer to the Wikimedia Privacy Policy.

LibreTranslate (optional)

An advanced optional provider. If you configure a LibreTranslate instance in the settings, translation requests are sent to the URL you specify. We have no control over that server.

3. Premium license

Premium licenses are sold through Gumroad (Gumroad, Inc.). When you purchase a license, your payment and billing information is handled entirely by Gumroad — we never see your card details. Gumroad's privacy practices are governed by the Gumroad Privacy Policy.

The license key you receive is validated locally within the extension using a cryptographic method (HMAC). No activation request is sent to any external server. Your key is stored in chrome.storage.local on your device only.

4. Permissions explained

The extension requests the following Chrome permissions:

5. Children's privacy

Hover Translator is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

6. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
